- 2Airport Security Zones: Texas law designates specific “airport security zones” where the carrying of firearms and ammunition is generally prohibited. These zones include the areas beyond the security checkpoint, boarding areas, and terminals. Violating these restrictions can lead to criminal charges.
Guns Possession at Airport
The Transportation Security Administration (TSA), which is in charge of airport security, explains all the rules you need to follow if you want to possess firearms in the airport:
- Guns must be empty and locked in a tough box.
- Every magazine or clip must be safely stored in a robust case or inside the rigid box accompanying the firearm.
- Bullets should be put in a strong box, like one made of cardboard, wood, or metal, or a special box meant for holding bullets.
- Firearms, ammunition, imitation guns, or components of guns such as magazines, clips, bolts, and firing pins are prohibited in your hand luggage. You are obligated to put them in your checked luggage, and it’s necessary to notify the airline at the ticket counter. The only exception is rifle scopes, which can go in both carry-on and checked bags.

- Class A Misdemeanor
Texas Penal Code § 46.02 addresses the unlawful carrying of weapons. If you’re a gun owner caught with a handgun outside your home or car without a license, you could get a fine of as much as $4,000 and spend anywhere up to a year in the county jail.
- Third- Degree Felony
According to Texas Penal Code § 46.03, if you take a weapon into a safe part of an airport, you could face a fine of as high as $10,000 and spend between 2 to 10 years in state prison.
Surprisingly, in Texas, airport gun laws have a provision that allows individuals with a License To Carry (LTC) to avoid getting arrested if they accidentally or intentionally bring their firearm into a restricted area, like an airport security zone. However, there’s a condition: the law requires the security officer to inform you about this exception. An LTC holder can’t be arrested for bringing a gun into a restricted area unless they’re told to leave first. If the LTC holder doesn’t leave when told, the security officer can arrest them.
The TSA might drop you a civil demand letter, even if you didn’t get held up or hit with official charges. The amount of the fine mostly relies on whether it was a loaded or unloaded firearm. A loaded gun can lead to fines between $4,000 and $10,000. Bringing an unloaded gun can result in fines between $2,000 and $4,000.
